Rowlett was a small farming town of less than 1,000 residents in 1893 when 13 church pioneers got together to establish a church of the Disciples of Christ. Less than 20 gathered in the Big A schoolhouse for services. In 1895 the first church building was completed and served as the church home until a new and larger one was built in 1923 on Main Street in downtown Rowlett. This served as the church home until 1996 when the present building was constructed at the corner of Miller and Chiesa roads.
Rowlett remained a small rural community for many years. The population in 1960 was still only 1,015. Lake Ray Hubbard was completed in 1971 and made Rowlett a lakefront community and growth soon followed. In 1978 the population was at 5,000 and has grown to over 55,000 today.
